Third person dies in crash at Sturgis, fatal crashes tick slightly up from 2021

A 66-year-old woman died Tuesday morning during the fourth day of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Fatal crashes are up slightly from 2021. Three people have died compared to one last year at this time.

The three-motorcycle crash happened at 10:30 a.m. within the city limits of Scenic, according to Tony Mangan, a spokesperson with DPS. A 2019 Harley-Davidson Trike stopped on the shoulder of Highway 34 and attempted to do a U-turn but, a 2021 Harley Davison motorcycle collided with the trike and then a 2018 Harley-Davidson Trike hit the motorcycle.

The 66-year-old passenger on the 2018 Trike was pronounced dead on scene, according to Mangan. The 71-year-old driver of the Trike and 62-year-old driver of the motorcycle had serious non-life threatening injuries and were taken to a Rapid City hospital. None were wearing a helmet.

A 64-year-old man driving the 2019 Trike had minor injuries and was taken to a Rapid City hospital, according to Mangan. He was not wearing a helmet. The 58-year-old passenger was not injured and she was wearing a helmet.

Injury crashes and felony drug arrests down

Injury crashes are down 6%, while felony drug arrests are down 11% from this time last year, according to Mangan.

DUI arrests are slightly up, sitting at 77 arrests compared to 74 arrests last year at this time, according to Mangan.
