Third quarter hurts Leathernecks at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. - Basketball is a game of runs, and this was certainly the case in the women's hoops contest between Western Illinois and South Dakota Thursday night (Jan. 20). The Leathernecks eyed a two-point deficit midway through the third quarter before yielding a 17-2 run that allowed USD to pull away for good. The final score read: WIU 53, USD 70.

The Coyotes ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run; however, Western responded with a 12-2 stretch of its own to take a 30-29 edge at halftime. The visitors held their final lead at 35-33 with 6:31 to go in the third, and the quarter marked their lowest offensive production of the night at seven points.

Evan Zars finished the night with a game-high, season-high 17 rebounds, while Danni Nichols and Elizabeth Lutz respectively added 14 and 12 points. The latter also notched seven boards and three steals.

The Leathernecks continue their journey through S.D. with a trip to South Dakota State Saturday at 2 p.m.

WIU-USD men postponed

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Summit League officials announced the postponement of the men’s basketball game between South Dakota and Western Illinois scheduled for tonight out of an abundance of caution due to health and safety protocols within the Coyotes’ program.

The game between the Leathernecks and Coyotes will be rescheduled at a later date. South Dakota’s game Saturday at St. Thomas is currently still on as scheduled.

Two Leathernecks Named To Summit League Golf Preseason Watch List

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- Western Illinois men's and women's golf each had a player chosen as an 'Athlete to Watch' in the Summit League men's and women's golf preseason poll. Cameron Karney, a senior from Crystal Lake, Ill., was chosen for the men's golf team. Katie Tanner, a junior from Auburn, Ill., was selected for the women's team.

"Both were consistent players during the fall season, and I anticipate they will continue this for the spring," said WIU Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "I'm looking forward to seeing what Cam can accomplish in the final season. Katie has tremendous potential to go low, looking forward to seeing that happen in 2022."

Cameron Karney | Sr. | Crystal Lake, Ill.

Karney enters his final season with the Leathernecks and had a great start in the fall. Karney led all Leathernecks with a 74.4 stroke average in four events. His best score of the season came at the Stampede At The Creek Invitational in Omaha, where he shot a +4 over par to place t-17th.

At the Payne Stewart Memorial, she finished with the best overall score for WIU at +12 over par to place t-18 overall. Tanner's first round was her best individual round score at +3 over par with a birdie.
