Third round of layoffs in under a year leaves 90 more workers without a job in Wisconsin

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials from a manufacturing company in western Wisconsin announced they will be laying off around 75% of its staff by early April.

Hutchinson Technology Incorporated, located at 2435 Alpine Road in Eau Claire, submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letter to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) stating its intentions to lay off 90 of the 121 workers at the location.

Corporate officials say that the affected employees have been provided notice of their layoff and the company estimates layoffs will begin on April 5, 2024.

Additionally, no bumping rights exist, and the affected employees are not represented by a union. Corporate officials say the action planned is permanent.

Hutchinson Technology Incorporated previously conducted a mass layoff in May 2023, where 237 employees were let go, and then another 50 in August 2023.

In total, the company has reduced its workforce in Eau Claire from 425 employees to 31 in just under a year.
