Third vacant Stockton building burns in a week

A fire early Friday at an apartment building near Oak and Sutter Streets is the third vacant building to burn in Stockton in a week.

Stockton Fire Department crews responded at 6:30 a.m. to the three-alarm blaze at 332 E. Oak St. to see the third floor of the vacant apartment building in flames.

Stockton Fire Operations Chief Brandon Doolan said the fire crews initially attacked the fire from the inside of the building but, within 10 minutes, were forced out. No injuries were reported.

"Too much fire, too much of a risk to our firefighters," Doolan said. "We pulled them out for a defensive nature that didn't lose any other structures."

The fire began to spread to an adjacent structure, but firefighters were able to keep the blaze in control, Doolan said.

The cause of the Friday morning fire is unknown and is under investigation.

The same apartment building was scorched in a fire last year.
