A third vehicle has been linked to a crash in which two men were killed June 13 on K-4 highway northeast of Topeka, a Kansas Highway Patrol spokeswoman said Monday.

"KHP is aware of the additional vehicle and who the driver is," said KHP Lt. Candice Breshears. "The investigation into this collision continues, and no further information is available at this time, as follow-up with the additional driver is in progress."

The third driver's name has not been made public.

Thomas Mika, 61, and Gerald Counter, 73, both of Topeka, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 3:40 p.m. on K-4 about 1.9 miles north of US-24 highway, according to a KHP accident report. The location was just south of N.E. 31st Street.

Counter's passenger, 58-year-old Daniel Starkweather, of Hoyt, was taken to Stormont Vail Health with suspected minor injuries, according to the report.

Mika was driving a pickup truck northbound on K-4 when he left the roadway on its west, re-entered the roadway, crossed its northbound lane and entered its southbound lane, the accident report said.

The pickup truck and an SUV driven by Counter, who was southbound on K-4, then collided, it said. Mika was ejected from his truck, which overturned.
