Thomasville City School Board members complete self-assessment

Nov. 22—Last Tuesday, the Thomasville City Schools Board of Education held their regular work session, discussing elements of their self-assessment action plan.

Kejar Butler, board chair, said that the self-assessment was based upon the expectations laid out for each board member and the superintendent and the domains detailed out in documentation.

"Once every year, we come together and we evaluate ourselves based upon that document and those domains," she said.

Alongside considering these roles and responsibilities of each board member, and the expectations to use in self-assessment, they also considered and discussed past recommendations in new board member orientation, such as a mentorship program for new board members.

Dr. Raymond Bryant, Jr., the superintendent of Thomasville City Schools, later spoke to the board in a presentation regarding balanced scorecards.

"In our profession, we have alphabet soup of terms we throw out all the times, and I think we sometimes forget to pause and say, what we're talking about, when we say balanced scorecard. What does it really mean," Bryant questioned.

A balanced scorecard, he explained, is an approach for measuring an organization's health that enables its users to effectively disseminate and measure performance amongst students and develop public education strategies.

"Clear and understandable design is the best," he said. "You know, we don't need to have something so wordy that, one, we can't understand, let alone our stakeholders. A student should be able to look at it and say, hey, I understand."

Additionally the work session went into matters regarding the GSBA Governance Team Achievement and the TCS Distinguished Committee Review.

After discussing responsibilities regarding these matters, Butler adjourned the meeting.
