Applications to join the Thomasville History Center's Apprentice Program are due Aug. 26, 2022.

The Thomasville History Center in Thomasville, Georgia, is excited to continue its initiative for teens that debuted in 2021. The Apprentice Program empowers Thomas County’s high school students in grades 9 through 11 to be consumers and producers of history through mentorship and project-based learning opportunities.

Students currently enrolled in a public or private school or in a home-school program can participate in the new cohort.

The Apprentice Program fosters the curiosity of teen learners and helps them to develop and master transferable skills that will serve them in their current and future educational careers.

Over the course of the school year, Apprentices get an up-close look at how museums and non-profits operate and go on excursions to other local museums.

In the spring, Apprentices will complete a capstone project that allows them to show their new expertise through a temporary exhibit proposal, research project, or program plan. Apprentices meet at the History Center twice a month and complete volunteer hours around their academic and extracurricular schedules.

This initiative is presented at no charge to Apprentices or their families. The Apprentice Program is underwritten by a generous grant from the Thomasville Antiques Show Foundation, Inc. Additional funding support is appreciated to maximize the experience for the Apprentices and to help the initiative grow. To contribute, please contact the Thomasville History Center.

Interested students must submit their applications by Aug. 26. An informational meeting will be held for parents and students on Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. to answer any questions about the program and its requirements. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance to the program by mid-September.

The Thomasville History Center was formed in 1952 and opened a museum within the Flowers-Roberts House in 1972.  Since 1972, the Thomasville History Center’s collections have grown to include more than 500,000 artifacts and archival materials and eight historic structures.  The History Center, in partnership with the state of Georgia, also operates the historic Lapham-Patterson House.
