Thomasville native self publishes Phonics book

Feb. 12—THOMASVILLE- Former Thomasville resident and educator, Rose Monroe recently self-published her first children's book "Let's Have Fun with Phonics Singing the Alphabet."

As an educator, Monroe knows Phonics is an essential skill that should be taught at an early age. But, the first step to reading and understanding the material is phonemic awareness.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken language.

Monroe's children's book does just that.

The book is combined with pictures, letters and sounds that help children learn to form the sounds needed to start reading words, whenever the time comes.

"This is not just a book, it's a program in book format," Monroe explained in a press release. "With this Phonics Alphabet Program book, your child will discover just how much fun learning letters and sounds can be."

When learning the letters and sounds, children can then finger trace over them. As young readers learn the shapes and sounds of letters, they can begin writing them on paper, while singing and reading the book in order to associate the formed letters, letter recognitions and sound with consistency.

"Writing helps improve memory and ignites a part of a child's brain, improving the ability to remember," Monroe said. "When the child learns and understands how to read, it will have lifelong benefits."

Monroe's hope is that her book, along with its sister site where it can be purchased, teachinglittlemindstoread.com, will encourage parents to begin reading with their child at an early age.

While she has yet to confirm a date, Monroe hopes to visit Thomasville soon and host a book-signing and reading event for young children and their parents. She encourages anyone interested to continue to check the purchasing website, where she will post information and dates when they become available.
