Thompson-Boling Arena blares 'Dixieland Delight' after Tennessee upsets No. 1 Alabama

Like football, like basketball.

Tennessee upset No. 1 Alabama on Wednesday in men's basketball, 123 days after the same thing happened in football.

Both took place inside a orange-clad friendly confines for the Vols. Tennessee basketball held the lead throughout the second half en route to a 68-59 win over the top-ranked Tide inside Thompson-Boling Arena on Wednesday.

And both resulted in 'Dixieland Delight', an Alabama football fan favorite song sung by the band Alabama about a Tennessee Saturday night, being blared after a Tennessee athletics win.

No wonder these two schools have such a rivalry. On Wednesday, the Vols students didn't rush the court. But they did sing along.

It was a big win for the Vols, top-ranked opponent or not. Tennessee lost consecutive games last week on buzzer-beating 3-pointers. Neither were particularly resume-damaging; Vanderbilt is surging and the game took place in Nashville, while Missouri is in good position to make the NCAA Tournament.

But the win over Alabama, which became the No. 1 team in the AP and coaches poll for the first time this season on Monday, can become a seed booster. Tennessee has two of those head-to-head wins in recent weeks against teams that will have a very good seed in the NCAA Tournament; last month, the Vols won at home against now-No. 5 Texas.

It's also something to beat the No. 1 team in the country, something that doesn't happen very often to Tennessee. It was the first Vols win over a No. 1 team since a 2018 win over Gonzaga.
