Thompson leads Georgia Amateur

Jul. 8—Evan Thompson held the lead after the first round of the 101st Georgia Amateur Championship on the Deer Creek course at the Landings Club in Savannah.

Because of severe weather, there was a near 5-hour delay. Play concluded at 8:30 p.m. with about half the field unable to complete their opening round due to darkness. Round 1 resumed, and was completed, Friday morning .

Thompson shot 5-under-par, 67 with a string of four birdies to close the first nine.

Alfred Roberts from Richmond Hill was second after shooting 68. Harry Jones of Augusta made six birdies in his round of 3-under-par at 69 and was in a seven-way-tie for third place.

Woodstock's Caleb Greiner shot 71 to finish in a tie for 14th. Other local players included Mark Buchholz (72), Lee Bowman and Connery Meyer (73), Connor Macmillan and Tyler Latimer (75), Jackson Stone (78), Jack Vajda (79), Matthew Starker (80), Andrew Yowell and Steve Kibare (81), Parker Rostowsky (82), and Brock Hoover (86).
