‘A Thousand And One’ Lands Near The Top Of 2023 Gotham Award Nominations Tally

The 33rd Annual Gotham Awards nominations were revealed Tuesday by the Gotham Film & Media Institute as 20 feature films, 11 television series, and 30 performances were singled out across 10 award categories in what is a wide and diverse field.

Among the nominations, A Thousand and One, directed by A.V. Rockwell and starring Teyana Taylor, nabbed three key nominations: best feature, breakthrough director and best lead performance. A24’s Past Lives is nominated in the same categories.

Other nominees include Raven Jackson for breakthrough director for All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, and film acting performances from Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Origin), Babetida Sadjo (Our Father, The Devil), Jamie Foxx (They Cloned Tyrone) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers).

Television performance nominees include Jacob Anderson (Anne Rice’s Interview with The Vampire), Dominique Fishback (Swarm) and Jharrel Jerome (I’m A Virgo)

The 2023 Gotham Awards Ceremony takes place in New York City on Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.

The nominees were revealed live from Cipriani Wall Street by Kia Brooks, the Deputy Director of The Gotham, and Jeffrey Sharp, the organization’s Deputy Director and an award-winning film producer.

Sharp commented on the award nominations saying, “We are proud to announce this year’s Gotham Award nominees and look forward to celebrating these amazing storytellers in a few weeks. The Gotham Awards in many ways reflects the industry and community we serve. Seen by this year’s nominees, storytelling knows no boundaries as our industry continues to find new audiences across the globe.”

The award show will feature three tributes to films this year with additional tributes to be announced at a later date.

• Maestro (Netflix) will receive The Gotham Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute, honoring Leonard Bernstein, the legendary musician, conductor, composer, teacher, and author, while celebrating Bradley Cooper’s masterful achievement that cinematically captures Bernstein’s story.

•  Air (Amazon MGM Studios) will receive The Gotham Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute honoring the visionaries behind the Michael Jordan partnership and celebrating Ben Affleck’s superb film.

• Rustin (Netflix), the upcoming film starring Colman Domingo, and produced by President Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground, will receive The Gotham Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice, honoring Bayard Rustin, the activist and organizer of the 1968 March on Washington, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, while celebrating director George C. Wolfe’s spectacular achievement in bringing Rustin’s story to life.

The Gotham Awards honor incredible and ground-breaking voices in storytelling, including writers, directors, producers, and performers. The 2023 Gotham Awards Ceremony will be place in person at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 7 p.m.
