Thousands Attend Funeral of Protester in Minsk

Thousands of people attended the funeral of Roman Bondarenko at a church in Minsk, Belarus, on November 20, the Belarusian news outlet TUT.by said.

Bondarenko died in hospital days after protesters say he was beaten by plainclothes security officials. Belarusian authorities have denied responsibility for his death.

Local reports said one person was arrested after Bondarenko’s medical records were released, showing no alcohol in his blood, in contradiction to an official account of his death.

TUT.by said on November 20 one of its journalists was arrested, and the trial of a second journalist had begun.

The EU has condemned the violence that has met months of protest in the wake of the disputed reelection of President Alexander Lukashenko. It said the death of Bondarenko was the “shameful” result of “brutality of plain clothed policemen.” Credit: TUT.by via Storyful
