In previous years, Ramadan has seen violent clashes between Israeli police and the Palestinians, particularly around the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, Islam's third holiest site, revered as the Temple Mount by Jews.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and during the month adult Muslims fulfill the religious obligation of fasting during daylight hours.

This year's Ramadan coincides with Judaism's Passover and Christian Easter.
