Thousands of gun safes recalled due to faulty biometric locks

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — Thousands of biometric gun safes from various brands were recalled because of faulty locks.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, four different brands of biometric gun safes are being recalled as of February 22, 2024. The brands include Bulldog Biometric Firearm Safes, Machir Biometric Personal Safes, BBRKIN Biometric Gun Safe, and Awesafe Biometric Gun Safes.

All four brands of safes are being recalled due to having faulty biometric locks that allow unauthorized people to open the safes, which could cause injuries or even deaths.

About 33,500 Bulldog safes are being recalled, with four reports of unauthorized people gaining access to the safe, Machir had around 24,820 recalled safes with 15 reports of unauthorized access, about 2,200 recalled BBRKIN safes with one report of a 6-year-old gaining access to the safe, and around 60,000 Awesafe gun safes being recalled with 71 reports of unauthorized access to the safe.

According to United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, no injuries have been reported from any of the safes being accessed by unauthorized people.

The Bulldog safe recalls include Bulldog Magnum Biometric Pistol Vaults, Magnum Biometric Pistol Vaults with Shelf, and Magnum Biometric Top Load Pistol Vaults. The model number is on a label on a silver sticker on the back right corner of the safe, and the brand name “Bulldog” is on the front of the safe, were sold for between $194 and $216 from July 2016 through January 2024, and were sold at Walmart, Bass Pro Shops, Amazon.com, and firearm stores across the nation.

The serial numbers of select Machir biometric personal safes that are being recalled can be found on lower right corner of the front door of the safe. The serial numbers that are a part of the recall can be found here. The recalled safes were sold for around $98 from July 2019 through around September 2021 at Walmart stores across the nation, Walmart.com, and Machir.com

The gun safes involved in the BBRKIN Biometric Gun Safe recall includes model number QCJJ01, and the serial numbers are on labels on the lower right corner of the front of the safe. The brand name “MouTec” can also be seen on the front of the safe, with the serial range: SQC202121000 through SQC202247603. The safes were sold exclusively on Amazon.com for between $170 and $400 from September 2021 through February 2023.

The Awesafe gun safes that were recalled are black and can fit two pistols. They have “Awesafe” on the front of the safe, and were sold online at Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and at Walmart stores across the nation for around $130 from August 2019 through December 7, 2022.

Anyone who owns one of the recalled safes were advised to stop using the safe, remove any batteries, and use the key to store anything in the safe until the users contact the company for further details and a replacement safe.
