Power restored to thousands of utility customers who lost it on Wednesday

LANSING — Utility companies have restored power to thousands of Lansing-area customers affected by weather-related outages on Wednesday.

More than 3,000 utility customers in Greater Lansing were without electrical service as of late Wednesday morning after a storm system brought strong winds and heavy snow to the region. But outage maps showed almost all of them had been restored as of late afternoon.

As of 11:30 a.m., about 2,500 Consumers Energy customers were in the dark, including about 1,200 in Eaton County and a little more than 1,000 in Clinton County, according to the utility's outage map. The biggest outages were in the Eaton Rapids and the Eagle Township areas, the map indicated. About 324 Consumers customers in Ingham County were without power.

By late afternoon, Consumers had no Lansing-area customers without power, according to its outage map.

Across its service area, about 65,000 Consumers customers were affected, the utility said. As of 11:30 a.m., that number had fallen to about 37,000, and by 4:30 p.m., about 17,000 remained without power, according to the outage map.

Consumers spokesperson Tracy Wimmer said most of the affected customers are on the west side of the state. Strong winds combined with heavy, wet snow brought down tree limbs and power lines, she said.

About 750 DTE Energy customers in eastern Ingham County and western Livingston County were without power on Wednesday morning, including 17 in the Williamston area. As of 5 p.m., there were only a few in the Williamston area.

The Lansing Board of Water & Light was reporting no outages as of late Wednesday afternoon.

Grand Ledge Public Schools said a power outage caused Wacousta Elementary School to close on Wednesday morning. Parents were asked to pick up their children.
