Thousands of Residents Without Power After Derecho Storm Downs Trees in Chicago

Trees were uprooted and power was cut for large numbers of people after a destructive derecho that included at least one tornado blew through Chicago, Illinois, on August 10.

The National Weather Service (NWS) urged residents to take cover as a dangerous line of storms that included winds of more than 70 miles per hour hit the city.

Chicago electric utility ComEd reported over 635,000 customers being affected by the storm, which it said featured over 4,000 lightning strikes. Almost half of the customers had their power restored by Tuesday morning.
