On Thursday 17th October, thousands of UK locations will play a birdsong soundtrack to raise awareness of Britain's declining bird population, organised by wildlife charity RSPB.

Train stations, retailers, stadiums and offices will awaken with the sound of birds, reconnecting the UK public with nature's beautiful song.

This comes after new research by YouGov found that an estimated five million Brits want to see the government prioritise tackling climate change in their long-term legacy. Almost three-fifths of people believe that nature in the UK is in crisis, the study also found.

"Earlier this year Let Nature Sing got the public talking about what birdsong means to them and the shocking fact that the UK has lost over 40 million birds in just half a century," Rebecca Munro, the RSPB's director of communications told ITV News.

"We all need birdsong in our daily life, but our natural world is in crisis, our wildlife is falling silent."

Throughout Thursday 17th October, each of the public spaces and offices taking part will play the birdsong at various times. "Any individual or business can take part by playing birdsong for even just a short time tomorrow. Play it in a tea break, replace your hold music for a day or play it in your reception area," Jamie Wyver from RSPB tells Country Living.

Interested to know if your local area will be taking part? Some of the locations playing the bird song includes:

  • Every branch of Cotswold Outdoor

  • Every branch of the Co-op

  • Every branch of Weird Fish

  • Lincoln Cathedral

  • Westfield London shopping centre (10am-10pm)

  • Westminster and Southwark tube stations (for short periods during the morning)

  • Wales Millennium Centre

  • Murrayfield Stadium

  • Translink stations in Northern Ireland

  • Parcelforce offices

  • National Library of Scotland

With previous studies showing us that birdsong can help to decrease stress levels, the sound of birds playing across the country is sure to brighten up the moods of those who listen.
