Transmission problem caused power outages for 24,000 in Green Bay area; service restored to most

WPS works to restore power in the 800 block of 13th Avenue on July 23, 2019, in Green Bay, Wis.

GREEN BAY - Power has been restored to most of the 24,000 Wisconsin Public Service Corp. customers across northwestern Brown County who were temporarily without power Friday afternoon.

At 2:45 p.m., WPS was reporting power outages for 13,874 customers in Green Bay, 6,394 in Howard, 2,389 in Ashwaubenon and 1,056 in Hobart.

As of 3:05 p.m., power had been restored to all but 96 customers in Green Bay, and a dozen or less in Ashwaubenon and communities to the west.

The outages were caused by an issue with transmission equipment owned and operated by American Transmission Company, WPS spokesperson Matt Cullen said. The issue impacted WPS’ electric distribution system, causing outages for about 45 minutes.

He added that WPS was in contact with ATC and crews are working with them to resolve the situation.

The Green Bay Police Department released an advisory to avoid traveling if at all possible, as the outage had impacted traffic lights.

Charter Communications also alerted its customers that Spectrum internet service was down in these areas.
