Thousands Without Power as Windstorm Hits Vancouver

Thousands of residents in Vancouver, British Columbia, were without power on January 13, after an overnight windstorm hammered the province’s southern coast, local media reported.

BC Hydro put out a regional alert after more than 53,000 customers in the Lower Mainland and more than 30,000 on Vancouver Island and in the Gulf Islands were left without power on Wednesday morning, the Vancouver Sun said.

Wind warnings were put in effect for Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands, and the North Shore, as well as central and southwest Metro Vancouver, with the Canadian Government warning of wind speeds of up to 70 km/h (about 43 mph). Credit: Ryan Voutilainen via Storyful
