SINGAPORE — Threads, the new social media app by Meta that is supposed to rival Twitter, was launched on Thursday (6 July) and, according to Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, already has over five million users signing up for the new social media app.

How does Threads work?

Users can sign up for Threads with their Instagram logins, and will be able to follow all the accounts they already follow on Instagram on Threads automatically as they join.

In Threads, users can send posts of up to 500 characters, include images, gifs, and videos of up to five minutes in length. There is no way to direct message other users right now.

Users can unfollow, block, restrict or report others. They can also filter out replies with certain words in them.

How to access Threads?

Currently, Threads can only be accessed via the iOS or Android apps. There is no desktop version at this stage, and Meta did not say when it might make one available.
