Weapon threat on Bluefield HS school bus determined to be unsubstantiated

BLUEFIELD (WVNS) – West Virginia State Police responded to a potential threat on a school bus in Mercer County on February 7th. The threat was later confirmed to be unsubstantiated.

At 5:30 in the evening on February 7th, West Virginia State Police and the Mercer County Schools Safety Coordinator responded to a possible threat on a school bus.

One student on the bus was alleged to have a weapon but after an investigation, there was no evidence to support the report.

When situations like these arise, parents need to be assured of their child’s safety during school and on bus rides.

Mike Collins, Principal at Bluefield High School, said the school utilizes outside sources such as law enforcement to keep students safe.

“Well, anytime that we in schools have a situation where, you know, we might have a threat on schools or students, we take those very seriously. We go into a full investigation. We involve the police, state police, local police. Try to get as much information as we can to make sure our students are safe” said Collins.

Although this threat was deemed unsubstantiated, real threats are possible.

Collins says students need to report any suspicious activity if they believe it is a threat.

“The best way to prevent things would be, you know, a lot of us have 600 kids or more. We need kids to speak to us. If they think that something doesn’t look right, or there’s a threat, or they see any kind of wrong doing, they need to report that to the administration” said Collins to 59News.

Real threats on school grounds and school transportation are possible. Through investigation, this threat has no proof or evidence, but if you see something you believe to be a threat, reach out and let someone know. Law enforcement says parents are assured that if a real threat arises, investigators and law enforcement teams will be on the scene.
