Hamtramck Public Schools closed a middle and elementary school campus on Tuesday due to a "concerning threat," according to a letter from the district's superintendent addressed to parents, caregivers and community members.

Jaleelah Ahmed, Hamtramck's superintendent, wrote on Tuesday that the district would close Kosciuszko Middle School/Dickinson West Elementary schools — the schools are located at the same address — due to a threat directed at the middle school and a specific individual within the school. The district plans to resume school Wednesday "following a comprehensive assessment of the situation," the superintendent wrote.

"We have taken the threat very seriously and, as a result, made the decision to close the school today as a precautionary measure," Ahmed wrote.

The Hamtramck Police Department is conducting an investigation, the superintendent wrote.

In all, 752 students attend school on the two campuses. It's unclear what the nature of the threat was, but Ahmed wrote in her letter that it's vital that children understand threats come with "severe legal consequences," whether they are made as serious threats or jokes.

Hamtramck Public Schools is a small district of about 3,000 students and eight schools, according to state data. Hamtramck is an enclave of Detroit.
