Feb. 23—Three area players earned first team recognition on the All-Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division girls basketball teams, the league announced on Monday.
Willard seniors McKenna Stephens and Layla Dials claimed two of the five spots on the first team after helping the Crimson Flashes to a co-league championship and a top 10 state ranking in Division III this season.
Stephens, one of four unanimous selections to the first team, averaged 16.8 points and 8.2 rebounds for the Flashes (20-3, 9-1) this season. Dials averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
Stephens finished second in scoring and fifth in rebounding among all Bay Division players, while Dials led the league in assists, and was sixth in steals and in scoring.
Ranked No. 7 in the final Associated Press state poll, Willard will face Carey (20-3) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Shelby High School in a district semifinal.
Also on the first team was Edison senior guard Aliyah Caporini. The 1,000-point scorer for the Chargers (13-9) averaged 14.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 5.6 steals per game.
Caporini finished first in steals, fourth in rebounding, fourth in assists and fifth in scoring this season in the Bay Division.
Earning a second team selection was Willard junior Presley Feltner, who averaged 11.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game before missing the final month of the regular season. She led the league in rebounds for the season.
Honorable mention selections included Willard senior guard Kalli Sowers (6.4 points, 2.8 rebounds) and Edison senior forward Lilli Schuster (9.3 points, 6.2 rebounds).
Margaretta's Eliana Schaefer was named the Most Outstanding Performer for the Bay this season. She averaged 16.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 3.0 steals per game for the Polar Bears (19-5, 9-1), who face Colonel Crawford (15-9) in the 7:30 p.m. district semifinal on Thursday at Shelby.
