Three area teams in contention for home playoff game at midway point

Sep. 20—COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the second official weekly football computer ratings on Tuesday.

The computer ratings are released every Tuesday beginning in the fifth week of the season, leading up to the final report on Oct. 23, when 448 schools — the top 16 in each region — will qualify for the playoffs.

Six area teams appeared in the rankings for a second consecutive weeks. Three of those teams find themselves among the top eight in their region, which creates the potential to host a first-round playoff game.

In Div. V Region 18, Willard (4-1) is eighth and Edison (3-2) is 11th.

The Crimson Flashes — off to their best start since 2003 — fell one spot from seventh last week despite a win at Lakota. Willard has a huge test in its SBC Bay opener on Friday when it hosts potent Huron, which is one spot ahead of it in the region this week.

The Chargers moved up three spots from 14th following a 34-0 win at Norwalk last week. A key game awaits Edison on Friday when it hosts Port Clinton (3-2) in the Bay opener. The Redskins are 17th in the same region.

Western Reserve (2-3) is 13th in Div. VI Region 22 this week. That is up five spots from 18th from the initial ratings after the Roughriders posted a 49-29 win over Plymouth last week. Western also has a key game at Mapleton (3-2) — which sits just ahead of it in the region — on the road this Friday.

In Div. VII Region 25, St. Paul (3-2) and South Central (2-3) made the biggest jumps out of the area contenders. Both teams moved up six spots from last week.

The Flyers moved up from 12th to sixth after a 54-30 win over Mapleton last week. St. Paul travels to Plymouth (3-2) this Friday.

Meanwhile, the Trojans jumped from 14th to eighth in the region after a win over Dayton Christian (2-3). South Central travels to Monroeville (0-5) this Friday.

The Big Red fell seven spots from 13th to 20th with the loss at Western.
