Three arrested on drug, weapons charges after traffic stop

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WCMH) — Three people have been arrested on drug and weapon charges after a traffic stop Thursday in Scioto County.

Sheriff David Thoroughman said a deputy was heading northbound on U.S. 23 toward Lucasville when he noticed a vehicle behind him with an expired registration. The deputy attempted to slow down so he could stop the vehicle once it had passed him, but instead, the driver turned right onto Cook Road.

The deputy stopped the vehicle about a mile later near Woodland Drive and learned that the driver, Tiffany Blanton, 38, of Waverly, did not have a valid driver’s license and was wanted on an arrest warrant in Pike County. Searching the vehicle, deputies found a loaded handgun hidden under the front passenger’s seat, a bottle containing what appeared to be fentanyl, digital scales like those used to sell narcotics and a jar containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Also arrested were Chris Madden, 39, of Portsmouth and Mark Swain, 31, of Piketon. The three are facing felony charges including drug trafficking, drug possession and having a weapon under disability.

Thoroughman said the case would be investigated and presented to a grand jury.
