Three COVID-related deaths and 87 new cases reported in region

Mar. 31—WILLMAR — Three of the 12 COVID-related deaths reported Wednesday in Minnesota occurred in west central Minnesota.

Chippewa, Meeker and Yellow Medicine counties each had one death, according to the latest state update.

In Chippewa County the death involved an individual in their late 90s, in Meeker County the individual was in the 70-74 age range and in Yellow Medicine County the person was in their late 70s.

There were 87 additional cases of COVID-19 reported in the 11-county area that's tracked by the West Central Tribune.

Stearns County had 47 new cases and Kandiyohi County 19 new cases overall.

Redwood County had seven additional cases; Swift County had six; Renville and Yellow Medicine counties each had two new cases; and Big Stone, Chippewa, Lac qui Parle and Meeker counties each had one new case.

There were no new cases reported in Pope County.

Statewide there were 1,660 newly reported cases overall.

The state's cumulative number of cases is now 519,529.

Of the cumulative number of cases, 39,226 of them have been among health care workers.

The state's current total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 is now at 6,848. Most of the deaths, 4,276, have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 5,671 of the people who died were 70 or older.

The information was included in the latest daily situation update from the Minnesota Department of Health, released at 11 a.m. daily. The data released are current as of 4 p.m. the day before.

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of COVID-19 cases among residents confirmed to reside in area counties and the number of deaths includes:

Kandiyohi County: 6,050 cases; 79 deaths

Lac qui Parle County: 718 cases; 21 deaths

Meeker County: 2,188 cases; 37 deaths

Pope County: 924 cases; 6 deaths

Redwood County: 1,556 cases; 34 deaths

Renville County: 1,615 cases; 43 deaths

Stearns County: 19,867 cases; 209 deaths

Swift County: 944 cases; 18 deaths

Yellow Medicine County: 1,041 cases; 18 deaths

The state is now also reporting daily vaccine administration numbers. As of Wednesday's report, 1,658,176 people have received one dose and 1,031,749 have completed the vaccine series statewide.

The percent of people who have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine in area counties ranges from 33% of residents in Meeker County to 55% in Big Stone County. To date, 38% of residents in Kandiyohi County have had at least one dose of the vaccine.
