Three dead in apparent overdose case in New Rochelle

Three men died and a fourth was in critical condition after apparently overdosing Saturday afternoon in New Rochelle, police said.

The man who survived called police just before 2:45 p.m. to report that the others were unresponsive and they all may have overdosed. He was barely coherent, police said, and did not know where they were, but dispatchers were able to track his cell phone to an apartment building at 50 Fountain Place.

There police found the four men in a storage room at the back of the building. Three men were pronounced dead at the scene and the caller was taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Capt. J. Collins Coyne said Saturday night that it was suspected the men overdosed on fentanyl but that had not yet been confirmed.

Law enforcement throughout the country have increasingly raised concerns about the dangers of illicit drugs being laced with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 times as potent as heroin according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
