Three local students each earned $750 scholarships from the Monroe County Farm Bureau.

All three are pursuing careers in agriculture. Money can used to attend college, trade school or apprenticeship programs that support the agricultural industry.

The Betty Bliss Scholarship was awarded to Sydney Masserant of Newport. The scholarship is named for long-time County Office Administrator Betty Bliss and has been presented annually since 1988.

Sydney is the daughter of Robert and Lisa Masserant. She graduated with honors from Jefferson High School, where she was involved in many extracurricular activities. She will be attending Michigan State University and studying agronomic sciences.

The Dale Lynn Mason Scholarship honors long-time secretary Dale Lynn Mason, who served the bureau for over 28 years. It was awarded to Eve Salenbien of Dundee.

Eve is the daughter of Josh and Rhonda Salenbien and graduated with honors from Dundee High School. She was the Dundee FFA chapter president and was involved with 4-H, selling market hogs. Eve will be attending Michigan State University to study environmental science.

The Young Farmer Memorial Scholarship is the oldest scholarship awarded by the bureau. It was renamed eight years ago as a tribute to the young farmers of the bureau whose lives were cut short before reaching their full potential.

The scholarship was awarded to Dane Kuti of Carleton.

The son of Steve and Donna Kuti, he graduated from Airport High School, where he served as the FFA chapter president. In December, 2021 he achieved the Eagle Scout rank with Boy Scouts of America. Dane will be attending Monroe County Community College to study agriculture operations.

Recipients are eligible to compete again for the scholarships, provided they continue their study in an agriculture-related field.

Since 1988, the Monroe County Farm Bureau has invested more than $47,000 in the future agricultural leaders of the area.

“We wish everyone who competed for these awards the best of luck as they continue their studies. They are truly the future of agriculture in Monroe County,” the bureau said.
