Three flee DUI crash east of Modesto. Stanislaus deputies aid CHP in rounding them up

Three men fled on foot after being in a DUI hit-and-run crash Sunday morning east of Modesto that involved three vehicles, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The collision occurred shortly after 9 a.m. on Albers Road just south of Dusty Lane, CHP spokesman Officer Tom Olsen said.

The preliminary investigation determined that Carlo Higuerra, 26, of Los Angeles was driving a 2003 Volkswagen sedan north on Albers, with two other men as passengers.

Higuerra allowed his car to partially enter the southbound lane, where it struck a 2016 Nissan SUV driven by Dalton Binda, 32 of Turlock, Olsen said.

After the crash, Higuerra and his passengers ran west toward a canal, Olsen said. Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies assisted the CHP in locating and apprehending the men and returning them to the crash scene.

Higuerra suffered minor injuries and after being medically cleared will face felony charges of DUI and hit-and-run causing injury, Olsen said. The passengers, whose identities were not available Sunday morning, do not face charges, he said.

Binda also suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center for treatment, Olsen said.

The third vehicle involved was a 2022 Kia sedan driven by Cheyenne Souza, 21, of Denair. Her car was struck by debris when the VW and the Nissan collided, Olsen said, but she was not hurt.
