Three forged checks bounce for over $1,000 in merchandise from Menards in Galesburg

GALESBURG — Over $1,000 worth of goods was reported stolen from a Menards in Galesburg after a series of forged checks were used to purchase power tools.

According to a Galesburg police report, a manager of the Menards located at 2891 Veterans Drive told an officer on Jan. 26 that three male subjects had come into the store on three different occasions and purchased items from the store using checks that all had the same names on them.

The manager learned that day that all the checks had bounced due to insufficient funds and said most of the items taken from the store were power tools.

The first check, written on Dec. 21, was for $291.42. The second check, written on Dec. 22, was for $427.10. The third check, written on Dec. 23, 2022 was for $382.69. In total, the checks amounted to $1,100.21.

Copies of the checks were placed into police records. The names on the three checks were of two people with the same last name of Sheridan, Illinois. At the time the police report was written, the officer was unable to contact the Sheridan Police Department for information on the people.

The officer was also unable to locate the people named on the checks through Independent Commodity Intelligent Services. There was a driver's license written on the third check, but dispatch ran the driver's license number out of all 50 states and was unable to get any information back.

The manager provided the officer pictures of the male subjects but the officer was unable to identify them. The police report lists the case as suspended with no leads.
