WOOSTER – Three employees were hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening after a Tuesday morning explosion at a biosolid processing facility, the Wooster Fire Department said.

Fire crews were alerted at 10:20 a.m. to a possible explosion at the Secrest Road Quasar Energy Group facility, Fire Chief Barry Saley told The Daily Record from the scene.

Severe weather: Storm leaves thousands without power in Wayne & Holmes, damages buildings, closes roadways

Upon arrival, crews discovered smoke and a small fire that extinguished itself, he said.

The explosion, which shut down the plant, took place in the black-domed digestion unit that processes biosolids, including food waste and manure, Saley confirmed. The structure collects methane gas build-up.

An official cause for the explosion has not yet been determined, he said. The incident is unrelated to the overnight severe storms that hit Wayne County, causing power outages, damaging buildings and closing roadways.

Wooster fire is working with the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Ohio Fire Marshal's Office and a Quasar representative to limit any potential environmental impact, he wrote in a news release.

Mutual Aid was provided by Wooster Township Fire and Central Fire departments.

An investigation is ongoing.
