Three injured by gunfire, one critically, in three separate Akron incidents

The long Memorial Day weekend ended up being an active one in the Greater Akron area.

Since Friday, three people have been reported injured by gunfire, one critically, in Akron. A 14-year-old also reported he was robbed at gunpoint.

Here's what we know about each incident.

Investigation into shooting of man, 18, hampered by crowd

Akron police found themselves facing what police reports called "a large, hostile crowd" when they responded Monday night to a report of shots fired around Orrin Street and South Hawkins Avenue.

Around this time, an 18-year-old man had walked into the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center with gunshot wounds to the arm and chest. The injuries were determined not to be life-threatening. He said he was shot by someone unknown near Orrin Street and Nome Avenue.

The officers near Orrin Street reported that they saw a 21-year-old man standing within arm’s reach of an AR-15-style rifle in plain view inside a vehicle with its windows down. The man backed away as officers approached him, but he was taken into custody after trying to escape the officers’ grasp. The 21-year-old sustained a leg injury and was later transported to Summa Health Akron City Hospital for treatment.

The 21-year-old man was charged with improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, obstructing, and resisting arrest. The man later admitted the rifle was his.

During a vehicle search, officers recovered a second weapon, a loaded handgun, and other evidence. Multiple shell casings were found in the street and later tagged along with the other evidence.

Due to the hostility of the crowd and officer safety concerns, investigators could not fully process the scene, and the shooting remain. under investigation. Lt. Mike Miller said the crowd was hostile due to the shooting and arrest, plus "directed energy towards the police."
