Three kids killed and 86,000 A/V carts that carry TVs in schools recalled as hazards

Three models of those A/V carts most well-known for wheeling televisions and overhead projectors around schools have been recalled by Luxor after three children were killed.

The exact problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The recalled audiovisual carts can become unstable when loaded with heavy objects, such as cathode-ray tube televisions (CRT TVs). When loaded with heavy objects such as CRT TVs, the recalled A/V carts pose a tip-over hazard to children, which can result in serious injury or death.”

According to the notice, this happened to three kids who died in tip-over accidents between 2006 and 2016.

By the time this year’s high school graduates got out of pre-K, flatscreen, LCD televisions replaced cathode-ray televisions atop the evolutionary ladder. But, well-preserved and/or lightly used CRT TVs remain in use, especially in financially stretched homes, businesses or entities that get every glimmer of function out of their electronics.

“Luxor and Stand Steady AV carts are safe when used as intended and in accordance with the company’s operating instructions and warning labels,” read part of a statement from Luxor president Paul Roche that was emailed to the Miami Herald. “This has been the case since we first sold these carts in the early 1980s.

“The few reported accidents occurred when children were left unsupervised near an AV cart that was holding a CRT TV.”

This covers the base models LP-DUO/TPDUOEQ; WT42 “Tuffy” plastic cart; and W42/AVJ42/SS-AVJ42 metal cart, 86,350 carts in the United States and Canada.

If you have any of these models, Luxor will provide ballast kits for you to install to give the lower shelf more stability. Also, there will be new warning labels for each shelf.
