Three killed in head-on crash early Monday on westbound I-94
MARENGO TWP. — Three people were killed in a head-on crash early Monday on westbound I-94.
Michigan State Police troopers responded to the two-vehicle crash near mile marker 115, east of 22-1/2 Mile Road, about 12:30 a.m. Monday, according to a release.
Troopers said a 42-year-old Massachusetts man was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-94 in a Ford pickup when he collided with a minivan traveling westbound.
The driver of the Ford pickup and two occupants of the minivan, a 46-year-old man from Indiana and a 4-year-old girl, died at the scene, police said. Names of the victims were not disclosed by police Monday.
Four additional minivan passengers, an adult and three children, were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigation and cleanup of the scene resulted in the freeway being shut down for about five hours. Westbound lanes reopened to traffic about 5:45 a.m. Monday.
Troopers said it is unknown whether the driver of the Ford pickup was wearing a seatbelt. The deceased driver of the minivan and the other adult passenger were wearing seatbelts, but three children in the minivan were not in child safety seats or wearing seatbelts, police said.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Albion Police Department, Marshall Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff's Department, Calhoun County Central Dispatch, Marshall Fire Department and the Marengo FireDepartment.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call MSP at (269) 558-0500.
