Three killed in head-on crash in southern Illinois, police say

Three people died in a Hamilton County crash Tuesday when a car crashed head-on with a tractor-trailer, Illinois State Police said.

The three victims were in the passenger vehicle and were pronounced deceased at the scene, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

Hamilton County Coroner Steve Bowling said Wednesday morning his office would not release the names of the victims until their families have been notified.

The crash occurred on Illinois 142 near County Line Road at about 5:22 p.m. Tuesday.

According to preliminary information from Illinois State Police Troop 9, the car was going south when the driver attempted to pass a vehicle and lost control. The car then went off the roadway into the right-side ditch. When the driver overcorrected, the vehicle then came back onto the roadway, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer, police said.

The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries.

No other information was released by Illinois State Police.
