Three-legged dog needs support after improper amputation

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A three-legged dog was saved from a shed in Theodore after delivering a litter of puppies during the freezing temperatures that swept through South Alabama.

“The reality is no woman wants to give birth in downtown Manhattan and fend for herself and neither does a mama dog,” Journey 4 Paws owner Kay Tonini said.

That dog’s name is Gracie, a proud new mom of eight puppies.

“We dug up a shed floor to get her out from underneath where she was,” Tonini said.

But when Tonini found Gracie, she noticed that she only had three legs.

“What we can best guesstimate is that it was an improper amputation. Whether she chewed it off or whether somebody tied it off or something else,” Tonini said.

Right now, Gracie’s front leg is only amputated halfway, but she needs surgery to fully amputate her leg. She will then have to go through extensive medical treatment to realign her other leg.

Gracie also has been diagnosed with heartworms.

Costing Journey 4 Paws, a non-profit, nearly $5,000 to bring Gracie back to good health.

Each of her puppies still needs to be vetted, spayed and neutered before they can be put up for adoption.

Journey 4 Paws said any donations help as they are working to lower the number of strayed pregnant dogs in Mobile County. You can make donations on their Facebook page.
