Three local 9/11 remembrance ceremonies to attend this Sept. 11. Here’s where

Are you looking to commemorate 9/11 this year by attending a local remembrance ceremony?

Here are three events you and your family can attend this year to honor the lives lost 22 years ago.

Hilton Head Island

The Town of Hilton Head Island is hosting a community-wide 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony to honor the 2,977 individuals who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The ceremony will take place on Monday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park, 59 Shelter Cove Lane on Hilton Head Island.

The event, which was coordinated by the Town’s Fire Rescue Department, will pay tribute to the bravery of first responders, the resilience of survivors, and the strength of communities coming together in the face of adversity, according to a release by the Town of Hilton Head Island.

The ceremony will feature Fire Chief Chris Blankenship and Battalion Chief Colin Fanning from the Town’s Fire Rescue Department, as well as a guest speaker, Michael Sturgis, who is a retired New York City Fire Department battalion chief.

Sturgis was on duty in New York City during the 9/11 attacks and will share his personal account from that day.

Throughout the ceremony, there will be a tolling of the bell followed by brief periods of silence. The moments will coincide with the times of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon building in Arlington, Virginia, and aboard Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, taking place at,

  • 8:46 am (Flight 11)

  • 9:03 am (Flight 175)

  • 9:37 am (Flight 77)
