Three local basketball teams host Class 5A state tournament first-round games

LAS CRUCES - Three City basketball teams will host Class 5A first round state tournament games this weekend.

District 3-5A champion Organ Mountain will host a first-round game on Saturday in the boys bracket while the No. 6 Centennial girls will host district rival Organ Mountain and No. 7 Las Cruces will host No. 10 Clovis in the first round.

Girls first-round games will be Friday with Organ Mountain and Centennial playing at 7 p.m., and Las Cruces and Clovis playing at 5 p.m. The Mayfield girls were seeded No. 12 and will travel to No. 5 La Cueva on Friday at 6 p.m.

The Las Cruces boys were seeded No. 14 and will play at No. 3 Los Lunas at 6 p.m.

Both boys games are on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Centennial girls beat Organ Mountain three times this season with the Hawks winning 67-63 last week in the district tournament semifinals. The winner of Friday's first-round game will play either No. 3 Volcano Vista or No. 14 Eldorado in the quarterfinals on March 7 at The Pit in Albuquerque.

The winner of the Las Cruces/Clovis game will play either No. 2 Farmington or No. 15 West Mesa in the quarterfinals. The Class 5A final is slated for March 11 at 2 p.m., at The Pit.

On the boys side, the Organ Mountain/Hobbs winner advances to play either No. 4 West Mesa or No. 13 Santa Fe in the quarterfinals on March 8 at The Pit in Albuquerque. The Las Cruces/Los Lunas winner will play either No. 6 Carlsbad or No. 11 La Cueva in the quarterfinals.
