Three local wrestlers win state titles

Las Cruces High's Alyssa Sedillo and Centennial's Tye Barker defended state wrestling championships at the Rio Rancho Events Center over the weekend.

Barker is a three-time state champion after winning the 145-pound championship. After winning back-to-back titles at 138 pounds, Barker defeated Atrisco Heritage's Tatum Garcia 5-3 in the final to finish the season 33-3.

After placing second as an eighth grader, Sedillo has won back-to-back state titles. She beat Rio Rancho's Elena Cordova 11-3 in the 100-pound final to finish her season 42-2.

Mayfield's Valeria Garcia-Aguirre won the 126-pound title, pinning Goddard's Autumn Cockrell in the final.

Organ Mountain's Bethany Sanchez placed third at 185 pounds,  Santa Teresa's Jennifer Rico was fourth at 235 pounds, Las Cruces High's Emberlyn Atma was fifth at 107 pounds and Las Cruces High's Prisila Vela-Garcia was fifth at 235 pounds.

Gadsden High's Tomas Hererra placed second at 172 pounds, Las Cruces High's Aden Martinez was fourth at 114 pounds, Las Cruces High's Ryan Baca was fifth at 160 pounds and Las Cruces High's Carlos Gamboa was sixth at 189 pounds.

Las Cruces swimmer places second at state meet

Las Cruces High's Nye Hanan placed second in two freestyle events at the State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Hanan was second in the 200 yard freestyle (1:43.74) and the 500 yard freestyle (4:48.24).
