PROVIDENCE – Three young men were shot Thursday night along the edge of the Chad Brown Housing project, the Providence police said.

Two of the men were seriously injured, while the third man's injuries were not as severe, according to Providence police Detective Maj. David Lapatin.

"Let's hope they all are OK," said Lapatin, who estimated that the injured young men were in their 20s.

The scene also encompassed a yard with a picnic table. Some people were in the yard at the time of the shooting, Lapatin said.

"We're just starting our investigation," Lapatin said.

"We think it may be someone who got out of a car and started shooting," Lapatin said, but he emphasized that the situation could have involved an exchange of gunfire.

"We don't know yet," he said.
