Three Mets home runs prove costly as Miami Marlins’ six-game win streak snapped

And the Miami Marlins’ improbable win streak comes to an end.

The New York Mets jumped on Miami early and added insurance runs late to beat the Marlins 8-4 Saturday at Citi Field. It snapped a six-game win streak for the Marlins, including five consecutive wins following an eight-day layoff as the Marlins were quarantined in a Philadelphia hotel following a COVID-19 outbreak inside their traveling party.

The Marlins, who at 7-2 still lead the National League East in winning percentage, cut their deficit to one, 5-4, in the sixth on a Monte Harrison two-out, two-run single through the right side that scored Corey Dickerson and Matt Joyce.

But J.D. Davis’ three-run home run in the seventh — the Mets’ third home run of the night — put the game out of reach.

Miami fell behind early after Daniel Castano, making his MLB debut, gave up five runs (four earned) over 4 1/3 inning. The majority of the damage came on a pair of two-run home runs from Michael Conforto in the second and Pete Alonso in the third. Castano struck out four and had 50 of his 76 pitches go for strikes.

The homers erased an early Marlins lead that came on Brian Anderson’s two-out RBI single in the first that scored Jesus Aguilar. Logan Forsythe, a free-agent signing last week, added a solo home run in the fifth.

The Marlins and Mets (6-9) close their three-game series Sunday, with first pitch set for 1:10 p.m. Pablo Lopez and Jacob deGrom are the starting pitchers.
