A flexible entertainment venue where visitors can grab a meal and watch live music; A primary care clinic expanding access to care for North Shore and Milwaukee's east side residents; A temporary Milwaukee Police Department headquarters for the 2024 Republican National Convention.

These are a few of the development projects expected to be completed and open on the North Shore in 2024.

Here's a closer look at these three new projects.

Fox-Bay Theater to open as a flexible entertainment venue in Whitefish Bay

Over a year ago, hundreds of Whitefish Bay residents, including multiple village board trustees, signed a petition seeking more concrete plans for the former Fox-Bay theater space.

But after a presentation by the building's owners before the village’s community development authority last month, residents have a much more lucid understanding of the project plan for the former theater at 334 E. Silver Spring Drive, which is likely to reopen as a reinvented venue by the end of 2024.

Sheldon Oppermann, chief financial officer of New Land Enterprises, the entity that owns the historic building, shared design renderings that re-envision the former theater as a more flexible entertainment space.

Community input and consultations with architects and designers led New Land to envision a place that could show movies, but also host people for events and meals.

Some examples Oppermann gave included live music, comedy shows, community theater performances, as well as birthday, graduation and wedding celebrations.

Making the space inviting could take some work though, Oppermann said, referring to a break-in almost two months ago that left the space “completely destroyed.”

The theater, which opened for a time in 2020 after closing due to the pandemic, closed in September 2020 and has been vacant since.

Milwaukee police to open headquarters in Glendale for RNC

For a relatively brief but significant time period, Glendale may be selected to open a vacant 47,000-square-foot building in the city as the Milwaukee Police Department’s headquarters for the 2024 Republican National Convention.

In mid-November, the Glendale Common Council scheduled a public hearing for one of its January meetings to consider Beerline Crossing owner Brian Monroe’s request for a development plan and development agreement for the building at 4160 N. Port Washington Road.

The approvals would allow MPD to use the space as its headquarters for the convention, including training and hosting officers from around the state.

If approved at the council’s meeting in January, MPD will occupy the space starting that month through July 2024, although the convention itself will take place in Milwaukee July 15 through 18.

Previously, the 47,000-square-foot space was leased to the Department of Corrections after it was converted into offices.

It's a proposal that hasn't been finalized.

Glendale's response to MPD's request for proposals must still be selected by the department, which would likely happen in the next few weeks. In an email to the Journal Sentinel in November, MPD said the department is "still in the process of determining which locations we may use during the RNC."

Along with the MPD headquarters, Beerline Crossing requested permission to add fencing, on-site security systems and to use the second floor as an exercise and physical therapy center under Health & Performance Collaborative, LLC.

After the July 2024 convention, Beerline Crossing will use the space for climate-controlled storage and for an electric vehicle factory repair center.

Froedtert primary care clinic to open in Shorewood

Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin plans to open a primary care clinic in Shorewood next summer, part of a growing network of primary care offices run by the health system.

The clinic, which requires approval by the Shorewood Plan Commission, would be located at 1901 E. Capitol Drive in Shorewood and primarily would serve residents of Milwaukee's east side and North Shore, according to a news release issued in December.

The 7,000-square-foot facility would include 13 exam rooms and an on-site laboratory, according to the release. The location was selected to expand access to care and add convenience for Milwaukee's east side and North Shore residents, the release says.
