Three from Norwalk earn All-SBC Lake first team; Edison's Simon earns top honor

May 17—Edison senior Thomas Simon was named Most Outstanding Player in the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division, the league announced Monday.

Vermilion's Ethan Hendrickson and Tiffin Columbian's Carson Mellott were named co-MOPs in the Lake Division and Hopewell-Loudon's Ashton Bour won the top honor in the River.

In the Lake, the Norwalk trio of Sam Battles (catcher), Ian Minor (third base) and Eli Obringer (outfield) were repeat selections to the first team.

The Truckers took a 15-7 overall record into this week and finished second in the Lake to league champion Columbian with an 8-4 record. They are the No. 1 seed in the Division II Fremont Ross district.

Through 19 games, Obringer batted .411 (23-of-56) with three doubles, two home runs, 10 RBIs and 17 runs scored. Minor was hitting .375 with seven doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs, while Battles was batting .264 with three doubles, 15 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Also for Norwalk, shortstop Caleb Sommers (.300, six RBIs, 16 runs) was honorable mention.

For Edison, Thomas Simon is 4-1 with a 1.58 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 35 innings. At the plate, Simon is batting .415. The left-hander will play collegiately for Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa.

Bay champion and Div. III No. 11-ranked Edison (17-7) had four of the 11 first-team selections. Joining Simon were infielders Clint Finnen and Hayden Fry and outfielder Xander Danner. Nine Chargers were honored across the first and second teams and honorable mention list.

Earning second team for the Chargers included pitchers Ben Bates and Blake Simon; infielder Brady Barker; and outfielder Bryce Michaelis. Infielder Noah Smith was honorable mention.

For Willard, sophomore infielders Isaac Robinson and Ethan Rodriguez also earned second team spots. Freshman pitcher Elijah Reed was honorable mention.

To earn Outstanding Player honors, Columbian's Mellott led the Tornadoes to the outright Lake Division title. He has a 5-0 pitching record with a 0.40 ERA and is batting .386.

Vermilion's Hendrickson is batting .493 with 14 extra-base hits and 27 runs batted in. He has a 2.50 ERA on the mound.

Bour is batting .517 for Div. IV No. 2-ranked Hopewell-Loudon, the River Division champion.

The all-conference teams were selected by the coaches in each division.
