Three overnight shootings in Jackson leave one dead, another in critical condition

Jackson police are investigating three separate shootings that occurred Wednesday, leaving one man dead and another in critical condition.

Around 10 p.m. Wednesday, Laramie Collins was shot multiple times while sitting inside his car in the 700 block of McDowell Road, department spokesperson Sam Brown said Thursday morning.

Collins died at the scene.

Brown said the suspect fled the scene and was clothed in a dark hoodie. At this time, there is no motive, he added.

Another man was shot multiple times in a separate shooting Wednesday evening in the 100 block of Cedar Lane, according to police. He was taken to a local hospital.

Jackson police are investigating a third shooting Wednesday evening in which an 18-year-old man was robbed and shot at the Burger King on Robinson Road, police said. He was taken to a local hospital and later to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is in critical condition, according to authorities.

As of Thursday morning, Jackson has reached 129 homicides, according to Clarion Ledger records. In 2020, the capital city recorded 130 homicides, the highest number in its history. The number marked an increase of 38 from the previous record of 92 in 1995, according to FBI data.
