Three dead, two others injured in two-car crash on U.S. 1 in Oslo

OSLO — A 58-year-old Vero Beach man and two elderly people from Fort Pierce were killed Saturday morning in a two-car crash near the intersection of northbound U.S. 1 and Oslo Road, police said.

The crash — which also left two other people, including a child, injured — occurred at about 10:20 a.m. Saturday near the McDonald's restaurant in the 700 block of U.S. 1, north of Oslo Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol and the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.

A black Kia Sedan driven by a 61-year-old Hollywood man was headed north on U.S. 1 in the outside lane, troopers said, when a southbound gray Dodge van driven by a 59-year-old Vero Beach man turned left into the path of the sedan.

The resulting collision killed the 58-year-old man, who was a passenger in the van, and an 89-year-old woman and a 93-year-old man, both from Fort Pierce, who were passengers in the Kia. All three were pronounced dead after being taken to area hospitals.

The 59-year-old van driver was being treated for serious injuries, FHP said, and a 7-year-old Vero Beach boy who was a passenger in the van was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach for treatment.

FHP did not disclose the names of the deceased or anyone else involved in the crash. The wreck closed northbound traffic on U.S. 1 at Oslo Road for several hours. As of 4 p.m. Saturday, FHP was still at the scene.
