Three people killed in head-on collision near Huntingburg Airport

One motorist tried to pass another just north of the Huntingburg, Indiana, airport Wednesday morning, and now three people are dead.

According to a preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police, a head-on collision occurred just after 5:30 a.m. when 34-year-old Bryant Doane of Santa Claus, Indiana, tried to pass another vehicle on U.S. 231 just north of County Road 900 South. Doane, who was driving a 2022 Subaru passenger car northbound, struck head-on a southbound 2004 Nissan truck driven by 52-year-old Macario Sandoval of Huntingburg.

Sandoval, Doane and Sandoval's passenger, 53-year-old Matilde Valdes of Huntingburg, died from their injuries. The vehicle Doane was trying to pass was not involved in the collision, according to state police.

The families of the victims have been notified, state police said. Autopsies are scheduled for Friday morning.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, Dubois County Coroner, Huntingburg Police Department, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Spencer County Emergency Medical Services, Saint Henry Fire Department, Huntingburg Fire Department and Dubois County Dispatch assisted in the incident, according to the Dubois County Free Press.

U.S. 231 was closed for more than three hours while the investigation was carried out, the Free Press reported.
