Shooting in North Bay Village leaves 1 dead and 1 wounded, but a 2-year-old unharmed

Police called to a North Bay Village apartment complex early Monday morning found a man with a handgun in the hallway, who quickly turned over the weapon and was taken into custody without a fight.

What they found inside a nearby apartment was far more unsettling: A man shot dead. A woman clinging to life after being shot several times in the stomach. And a 2-year old toddler, physically unharmed.

“Thankfully the child is OK. She’s fine,” said Miami-Dade police detective Luis Sierra.

By early afternoon, a lot of questions still remained. The woman was taken by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and was undergoing surgery. And the shooting suspect remained in police custody and had not been charged with a crime.

But because of the condition of the adults, Miami-Dade police said they still weren’t certain how the trio was related or who the toddler belonged to. They did refer to the incident as domestic violence, said it happened inside an apartment, though they wouldn’t release the number. And police said, the child would be turned over to child services.

Police said they were initially called to the Belle Isle apartment complex at 7920 East Dr., a beige two-story apartment complex on the water on the island’ city’s north side, just before 8 a.m. They didn’t say who made the call. Miami-Dade police are investigating the shooting.

North Bay Village Police Chief Carlos Noriega said it was the village’s first homicide since 2012. The island community of 8,000 is situated along the 79th Street Causeway and is the connector between Miami and Miami Beach.
