Three in the running for District 1C seat in the Maryland House of Delegates

A new face will represent District 1C at the Maryland General Assembly.

The district takes in western Washington County and eastern Allegany County.

Most recently, it has been represented by Mike McKay, a Republican. But McKay is not running for that job again. He chose to campaign for a seat in the Maryland Senate.

Seeking the open delegate position are Republican Terry L. Baker, who is currently a Washington County commissioner; Democrat Carrie R. Hinton; and Green Party candidate Charlotte McBrearty.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8, but early voting runs from Oct. 27 through Nov. 3. A request for a mail-in ballot must be received by Tuesday, Nov. 1.

The Herald-Mail sent questionnaires to the candidates. Included were basic biographical questions, as well as opportunities to list websites and social media accounts so voters can learn beyond just answers to the questions we asked. Responses were limited to 500 characters — the equivalent of more than two tweets.

The questionnaire was sent in early October. Baker responded.

Attention for Western Maryland

The House of Delegates is dominated by legislators from Baltimore City and Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, whose districts are vastly different in almost every demographic from Western Maryland. What’s your strategy for convincing these legislators to support economic, education, public safety, transportation and other policies that will tangibly benefit Western Maryland?

Baker

It will be my job in Annapolis to make sure Western Maryland gets our fair share of state revenue and resources. I pride myself on listening to people and being willing to work with them and I will do all I can to show the other delegates how a strong Western Maryland benefits the whole state.

How does the process work?

In many ways, Annapolis can seem far away from your potential constituents. Do you believe they have a good understanding of how the legislative process works? How will you communicate with them how legislation important to them is progressing?

Baker

I do believe my potential constituents have a good understanding of the legislative process. If they have any questions they are always welcome to reach out to my office so we can try to help. I plan to communicate with my constituents regularly through email newsletters, social media updates, and community events.
