Marlington Alumni Association has announced three new awards for graduates of Marlington Local School District.

The Mike and Linda Pauli and Family Scholarship and Ede Caretta Family Scholarship were created in 2022, while the Govern-Schisler Family Scholarship was created in 2021.

The Mike and Linda Pauli and Family Scholarship will go to Marlington seniors pursuing two-year tech or trade programs.

Mike (’68) and Linda (Hoover) Pauli (’68) started dating as sophomores at Marlington and married in 1969. Mike Pauli began performing electrical work as an apprentice in the early 1970s, and founded Pauli Electric in 1975 after his service in the US Army. In the early years, Linda Pauli helped with billing and payroll.

Today, Pauli Electric provides electrical work for residential homes, and farms and industrial and commercial properties, along with servicing fire alarm systems and generators. The company has 18 employees, including some who are Marlington graduates.

Mike Pauli is a Lexington Township trustee who also is active in Alliance Chamber of Commerce, Alliance Area Development Foundation, Independent Electrical Contractors Association, Better Business Bureau, and Eastern Stark County Safety Council. Mike served on the Stark Development Board.

Linda Pauli earned a degree in nursing from Walsh University, a bachelor of arts in management from Malone University, and has completed post-graduate work at University of Akron. She has certificates from Timken Mercy Hospital School of Practical Nursing, Alliance Community Hospital and Stark State College. She also served 25 years as director of the Student Health Center at University of Mount Union.

The couple’s four children all are Marlington graduates. They also have 12 grandchildren.

The Ede Caretta Family Scholarship will honor Caretta’s devotion to students experiencing difficulties or having special needs. The scholarship will be awarded to students who have succeeded despite difficulties or are pursuing a career helping others.

Ede Caretta died at 74 on Feb. 14, 2022. She was the daughter of Ernest V. and Parma J. (Soviero) Caretta, and received a bachelor of science in special education from St. Mary’s College. She worked 37 years at Marlington High School.

Caretta was a volunteer at Alliance Woman’s Club, Alliance Catholic Worker House, and a member of Alliance Area Retired Teachers Association. She attended book clubs and other events at Rodman Public Library, and shared her passion for reading with others through the YWCA book community.

Jodi Govern (’82) established the Govern-Schisler Family Scholarship in honor of her family. Govern received a bachelor of arts in political science in 1986 and graduated from Ohio State University College of Law in 1989.  She worked as an attorney for the State of Ohio for 30 years and lives in Dublin, Ohio.

This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Marlington graduate attending any Ohio public university, with a preference given to students attending Ohio State.

Govern’s mother, Geraldine (Schisler) Govern, graduated from Marlboro High School in 1957. Govern’s sister, Kim (Govern) Niskanen, graduated from MHS in 1984. Her brother, Rick Govern, graduated from MHS in 1986. Rick Govern’s wife, Jeanine (Funk), is a 1988 Marlington graduate.

Each scholarship focuses on specific interests and academic pursuits. For more information about establishing a named scholarship, contact marlingtonalumni@yahoo.com or MAA board member Vondea Sheaffer at (330) 697-4036.
