Three people were shot and injured Sunday night in the Six Flags Great America parking lot, representatives from the Gurnee, Illinois theme park said.

Ambulances took two people to the hospital, and a third person declined treatment, Six Flags said in a statement.

Someone fired shots from a vehicle in the parking lot and drove away, Six Flags said.

Park security and Gurnee police on site responded to the victims and closed the park early, a spokeswoman said.

Initial reports indicate that police responded about 10 minutes before the park was set to close at 8 p.m.

Authorities did not say what led to the shooting or any circumstances surrounding it.

According to witnesses on social media, some visitors sheltered inside the park. Crowds of visitors were able to leave the park after some time.

Six Flags Great America is a 300-acre theme park with 17 roller coasters and a water park. The park is located about 11 miles south of the Wisconsin-Illinois border and about 50 miles south of Milwaukee.
